It's taken several years, but we are finally moving on creating a good range here on Nantucket. We have a range and accompanying buildings designed and approved, the land leased and fund raising under way.

Our first major effort is an event to benefit the Nantucket Hunting Association and Ducks Unlimited. It will be held July 14, 2011 at Nantucket's White Elephant Hotel. There will be drinks and hors d'oeuvres and an auction offering some outstanding hunting and fishing trips (To Chile, for example), a stay in CA Wine Country, about 20 guns including a nice Beretta, local fishing charters and so on.

This event won't pay for a range, it's just one of the first steps to put the plans in motion, but I'm excited about some real progress. Now I need to finish the web page that will accept donations, sell tickets and memberships and so on. Whew! Where did I put that midnight oil?

Maybe even running a range coffee and donut bar as a hang out for the shooters might benefit. It could be the toll booth as such, where they enter the range.

Lofty ideas I know

Definitely a possibility van, the expenses will be ongoing. When it all comes together, I'm going to have to get me a scattergun and go after some of those circular pigeons.

Tonight was the second annual Ducks Unlimited/Nantucket Hunting Association benefit auction and cocktail party. I didn't stay for all of the proceedings, but ate some great hors d'oeuvres and chatted with fellow shooters. I didn't spend too much time at the Famars display, as those shotguns cost more than a couple of good pickups! They were gorgeous though...

Dale Hall and Doug Painter were the featured speakers, and Animal Planet's Jeff Corwin was in the crowd, offering a tuna fishing excursion for auction. We're hoping for a good take for the evening, needing the money not only for our range development, but to respond to the anti shooting element trying to stop us.

In the foreground: Jeff Corwin. That's about $20,000 worth of ticket sales before the auction.

Update on the long journey toward our range:

Last night the local planning board approved our Major Commercial Development permit by unanimous vote. There will still be an appeal by the housing association that opposes our plan, but we are gaining strength. I hope there are some guns left by the time we're done.

The good news I need will come from the legislative and judicial branches of the Federal Government and the United States.
